The International Centre for Complex Project Management (ICCPM) is a not-for-profit organisation providing education and training programs aimed at improving global capability to deliver complex projects and manage complexity. Together with the University of Queensland they are providing decision makers in industry and government with credible independent assessments of issues of complexity facing the management of specific projects and organisations. ICCPM needed to move their business activities into overseas markets and they were seeing Export Market Development Grant EMDG support to assist in funding this expansion.
Being a not-for-profit business means that ICCPM does not have surplus funds to invest in international marketing however conferences and marketing to international partners are a crucial means for growing exports. EMDG was a program that would benefit ICCPMs international growth strategy however their small team meant that they did not have the internal resources to fully understand the requirements of EMDG and the documentation required to support a claim.
Export Solutions were engaged months before the end of the financial year in order to provide advice on eligibility and training on how to use the Export Solutions EMDG Kit. Advice was provided on systems required to capture documentation to support ICCPMs first claim.
Quote from the client
“For SME’s exporting Australian capability is a difficult and expensive proposition. The EMDG has made a significant contribution to enabling our international market development. As such we see it as a sensible and important federal government grant program. Export Solutions have made what can be an onerous task for an SME preparing a grant application a relatively seamless process with a terrific outcome.”

How it works
The Export Solutions EMDG Kit allowed ICCPM to capture all necessary supporting documentation. Staff had access to support to keep them on track and ensure eligibility of all expenses claimed.
Export Solutions provided ongoing advice to ensure that future marketing activities were supported and eligible. Communication with ICCPM also ensured that new staff were aware of EMDG requirements and fully trained on the use of the EMDG Kit.
ICCPM had received other revenue to fund marketing activities. The EMDG scheme does not allow you to claim for costs where there has been a reimbursement. Careful identification of these reimbursed costs before the audit ensured that time and effort was saved at the meeting with Austrade to assess the claim. ICCPM outsource the delivery of their courses through Queensland University so demonstrating that they actually own the product being marketed was a key eligibility issue for them.
Export Solutions hands on approach to working with ICCPM enabled them to have the confidence that their services would be eligible. Being a not-for-profit means that funds need to be spent responsibly. Export Solutions fees are success based so there is no risk of overspending on unexpected consulting fees. ICCPM could undertake key marketing activities such as international travel and engagement of an overseas representative with the knowledge that their activities would be claimable through EMDG.
ICCPM are in the process of establishing overseas training facilities for the delivery of their courses. Without the support of EMDG to assist with their international marketing the funds required to establish this overseas entity would not be possible.
